Pupusas salvadoreñas is a typical dish from El Salvador that has become popular in many other Central American countries, as it is also eaten in Honduras and Guatemala.
It is a corn or rice tortilla filled with different ingredients such as cheese, beans, chicharrón or loroco, among others.

In shape and presentation, Salvadoran pupusas are similar to Venezuelan arepas but also have some resemblance to Mexican tortillas, especially those made with corn flour.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups INTERTRÓPICO® corn flour
  • 2 cups of warm water
  • 1 teaspoon salt and oil
  • Cabbage, carrots, onion, cauliflower, tomato, garlic, chili and spices

Steps

STEP 1

In a bowl, make the dough in the same way as a tortilla or arepa, let it rest.

STEP 2

Take a fist-sized amount of dough, make a ball and flatten it well, in the center we put the filling of our choice.

STEP 3

Carefully close, shape and cook on the griddle on both sides.

STEP 4

To make the sauce, blend the tomato, onion, garlic, spices, a little water and cook until it boils.

STEP 5

For the curtido, chop the cabbage, carrots, onion, cauliflower and chili.
Wash well with hot water and season with vinegar.

STEP 6

Cook the Pupusas in a hot pan or skillet for 2 – 3 minutes.

STEP 7

Serve hot with sauce and curtido.

  • Bean Pupusas
  • Pupusas de chicharrón
  • Pupusas de loroco (a plant whose flower is edible and aromatic. One of the main condiments in Salvadoran cuisine).
  • Scrambled pupusas, with chicharrón, cheese and beans
  • Pupusas of tender pumpkin (ayote)

But you can also find varieties such as: spinach pupusas, chicken pupusas, tuna pupusas, shrimp pupusas, tuna pupusas, among others.
